Washington Drug Abuse: Drug Addiction in Washington
Drug addiction is a major concern in almost every part of the country. The number of people dependent on illegal drugs is very high in Washington. As Canada and Washington share a same border, it serves as a transshipment point for most of the drugs and monies. Most of the drugs like the marijuana and other drugs get an easy entry to the United States. Crystal methamphetamine has made Washington its home. Methamphetamine is easily available in any corner of Washington. Drug trafficking organizations are responsible for distributing the methamphetamine. Washington is the third among the other states in manufacturing and methamphetamine abuse. The Yakima valley shelters majority of the drug trafficking organizations that is responsible for the distribution of drugs.
Cocaine is widely available. Crack cocaine is largely used by low-income groups or in the urban areas. Cocaine is smuggled through Washington and sold in Canada at a much higher rate.
Mexican black tar heroin is very common in Washington. It is produced in Mexico and then delivered to the eastern and the western part of Washington. The Mexican drug trafficking organizations are responsible for the smuggling of heroin and directing it to Washington. Many addicts are found dependent on heroin in Washington.
Washington is known for smuggling methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on a large scale from Canada. MDMA activities have increased in Washington. It is a drug easily found in clubs. Other club drugs like the LSD, PCP, GHB, and ketamine are easily obtained at rave and other night parties. As majority of the crowd consist of young college girls and boys, addiction is catching up rapidly among the youth of Washington. Most of these clubs drugs are smuggled through US post services. Asian gangs dominate the trade of club drugs.
The smuggling of drugs is conducted very easily in Washington. Drugs are usually carried via packed vans, suitcases or even express mail packages. Drug addiction has caught up rapidly with the people of Washington. Large numbers of people are incarcerated in prisons. In order to reduce the number of incarcerations the government of Washington decided start up-treatment of those imprisoned. The money that was recovered was used for the treatments.
However, the law allows some patients to use medical marijuana under the prescription of the physician. Washington holds the 30th place for law violation in the national ranking. Many families are separated and many relations are broken everyday due to the increase of drug addiction. With addiction growing on a large scale, Washington has now come up with many drug treatment and rehabilitation institutes. Many youth are admitted to the day care and rehabilitation centers daily. Washington is now taking an effort to eradicate drugs and help addicts. There are various types of treatments given. One can choose to be an outdoor or an indoor patient. Many NGOs are making an attempt to help the addicts. Both government and public institutions are coming up rapidly to help Washington get rid of drugs and the addiction.
